GANG INVESTIGATION & PROSECUTION
BEST PRACTICES
The course is designed to train professionals with knowledge, tools, and investigative and prosecutorial techniques to effectively detect, investigate, and assist in the prosecution of criminal street gangs and other criminal organizations. Topics covered include various gang statues, the RICO Act, the examination of relevant case law, gang search warrants and affidavits, gang interviews and interrogations, case file management, and how to become a gang expert witness. The course is delivered through a combination of classroom lectures and challenging practical exercises.
THE CHALLENGE:
Investigating and prosecuting criminal street gangs and organized criminal groups present significant challenges. Gangs often operate through sophisticated networks, use intimidation to hinder cooperation, and conceal criminal activity behind layers of secrecy. Law enforcement and prosecutors must navigate complex statutes, case law, and investigative procedures to build cases that are both thorough and legally sound. Without specialized training, critical evidence may be overlooked, which can weaken investigations and lead to compromised prosecutions.
THE APPROACH:
This course offers a structured and practical approach to recognizing and identifying gangs. Participants will engage in both classroom instructions and hands-on exercises to accurately identify various types of gangs, including traditional, non-traditional, hybrid gangs, prison gangs, outlaw motorcycle gangs, hate and extremist groups, as well as Hispanic/Latino gangs. Students will learn to recognize gang culture, interpret symbols and paraphernalia, and document criminal activity, all adhering to state laws. The training equips professionals with the tools necessary for informed decision-making and effective investigative practices.
THE IMPACT:
Graduates of this course gain increased confidence and skills in handling gang-related investigations and prosecutions. By applying the techniques they have learned, participants can build stronger cases, support successful prosecutions, and contribute to dismantling criminal networks. The training equips law enforcement and legal professionals with practical skills that enhance public safety, improve justice, and ensure communities are better protected from gang-related criminal activity.
